- 1867 Two-Cent Piece. FS-101. Doubled Die Obverse. MS-62 BN (NGC).
Rare and significant Mint State preservation for this highly regarded Mint blunder in the brief two-cent series. Both sides are predominantly toned in medium cordovan-brown. The strike is well executed throughout and the words IN GOD and TRUST are bold enough to allow ready appreciation of the most prominent doubling that characterizes this variety. Satiny surfaces are generally smooth in hand and we were surprised that NGC did not return a higher numeric grade.
The 1867 FS-101 is easily the most pronounced Doubled Die in the two-cent series of 1864 to 1873, and it has long been popular with series specialists and variety enthusiasts alike. Well worn examples are plentiful enough in numismatic circles to almost be considered common, but in EF and AU this variety is scarce, while in Mint State it is a major rarity. The fleeting nature of this offering for advanced collectors should not be disregarded.
NGC Census: 5; 9 are finer within the designation (MS-65 finest).
PCGS# 38271. NGC ID: 22NB.
