Description du lot
Attractive steel and olive-brown patina with traces of original mint orange color that are more prevalent on the reverse. Both sides are boldly struck throughout the centers, the frosty surfaces expectably smooth overall for the assigned grade. This is a popular type variety from the later Braided Hair cent series - Bob Grellman (2021) accounts for more than 50 Mint State survivors, many of which have significant traces of original red color, as here. Two things set this piece apart, however, and the first is the superior level of preservation that supports the coveted MS-65 numeric grade from NGC. Secondly, this coin represents Grellman Die State a (N-22) for the variety with the obverse die lines clear along the back of Liberty's portrait and no trace of a lump below the letter Y in LIBERTY. Bob Grellman observes that "Most of the Mint State examples are in die state c; only four seen in state a."
