- Lot Description
- 1871 Pattern Five-Cent Piece. Judd-1051, Pollock-1185. Rarity-6-. Proof-65 RD (PCGS). The obverse features the three cent nickel obverse design in a larger format, while the reverse has V CENTS in the center with the V reversed, surrounded by a wreath. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Interestingly, the 7 in the date appears to have been punched over a sidewise 1. Bright copper-red color tends to deepen somewhat to cherry-red at the peripheral areas. A rare opportunity to acquire a fully red copper pattern from the 1870s. One of only four Red examples certified by PCGS and in the finest tier of those.
