An impressive survivor of this paltry Proof mintage showing both superior production quality and preservation. Dressed in a vibrant deep golden-yellow color with strong contrast between the satiny devices and mirrored fields. The surfaces remain fully composed and without notable blemishes, truly a wonder in such a large size gold coin produced in Proof format.<p>Proof double eagle production fell off markedly in 1904 with a mintage of just 98 pieces, as opposed to 158 coins for the Proof 1903. The former is an elusive issue in all grades, as befits the type, and the typical survivor displays little to no cameo contrast due to having been struck from highly polished dies. An extraordinary strike and condition rarity, this is remarkable find for the advanced gold enthusiast that would serve as a focal point in any cabinet.
