Lightly Circulated 1856 Flying Eagle Cent 1856 Flying Eagle Cent. Snow-3. Proof-58 (NGC). Pleasing collector quality as the surfaces show just a whisper of circulation on the high points and the color is a light even tan on both sides. Minor strike doubling as often seen, effecting the peripheral letters and date. Minor nicks when closely examined, but free of dark spots or other impairments, retaining the eye appeal that most collectors appreciate. Issued in limited numbers in 1856, finding broad and widespread acceptance, the launching of these handy small sized Flying Eagle cents marked the end of the much larger and cumbersome Large cents--as 1857 drew to a close, over 17 million new smaller cents flooded the channels of commerce.
