Lot Description
With a backlog of silver coins hoarded during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras still being absorbed into domestic circulation throughout the 1880s, it is little wonder than the Mint struck only 12,000 new half dollars for theoretical commercial use in 1889. All of these coins are attributed to the Philadelphia Mint, the delivery intended more to prevent a Proof-only date being formed than for actual circulation. Although many examples were certainly saved at the time, this issue is surprisingly scarce in premium Mint State preservation, as limited CAC stickered totals confirm. This offering represents a fleeting opportunity worthy of serious consideration.
