- A lustrous and frosty example of this common variety that fortunately comes on high quality, golden-brown planchets like this one, making it the ideal and likely choice for type sets, as there is a small supply of superb AU coins. The reverse of this one exhibits more extensive toning in gently marbled charcoal-russet that, when viewed with the aid of magnification, is associated with light carbon build up. This does not distract during in-hand viewing, and there are also no troublesome marks or planchet flaws to report. The border at lower left obverse approaches the top of the letters VER in VERMON, reverse off center to upper left with no border denticulation from 7 to 12 o'clock. Overall detail is bold to sharp, however, and there is plenty of eye appeal. The fine die lines that are often diagnostic of high grade early copper are plainly visible here, especially on the reverse. The Syd Martin RR-20, ex Crosby and Garrett, brought $5,280 in our August 2023 Global Showcase Auction as AU-53 (PCGS). This one is nearly its equal (the certified grade being of little help when comparing individual Vermont coppers) and will also see spirited bidding among knowledgeable collectors.
