- While the double eagle was being produced in significant quantities, largely for use in international commerce, quarter eagle production limped along during the 1880s with most issues registering paltry mintages for circulation. The 1884 $2.50 is no exception, with a mere 1,950 coins delivered for theoretical commercial use. Indeed, most survivors grade AU, confirming only limited use in circulation for the issue. In an absolute sense, of course, an attractive Choice AU 1884 as offered here is a scarce coin; the majority of the mintage was eventually melted. Glints of pale silvery tinting visit both sides of this otherwise pinkish-orange example. Sharply struck with abundant mint luster.
