- Syd Martin's survey of 1670-A 5 sols in major collections (published 2015) located four examples of this variety; this was one of the more plentiful die marriages of the issue he encountered. The 5 sols, as a type, is considered Rarity-4. It is encountered in a breathtaking range of grades, from nearly slick to Choice Mint State, though middle circulated grades, as here, are the most frequently encountered. There is good evidence to believe this type circulated in Canada and elsewhere in the French territories, even if the French West Indies was its first stop. The present example is well centered in strike with all areas boldly defined for the grade apart from minor softness at central reverse. Lightly cleaned at one time, retoning minimally around the obverse periphery, yet free of sizeable marks. A shallow flan flaw at right reverse border is as made.
