- Tompkins Die Stage 5/1, Rea et al. Die State d. Tompkins Plate Coin. The approximately 15-degree counterclockwise rotation of the reverse from normal coin alignment is typical of this Browning number. Silver gray surfaces retain plenty of bold to sharp striking detail and frosty mint luster. This is the terminal (as reported by our consignor, 2008) obverse die state of the variety, the die shattered with a series of cracks radiating out from below the letter B in LIBERTY. The authors of the 2010 Rea et al. reference on this series report an even later die state with faint bars at Liberty's ear from obverse clashing, which features are discernible on the present coin when it is studied with the aid of a loupe.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: An early acquisition for which it took me 14 years to find a suitable upgrade. The cracks are full, bold and easy to appreciate, hence its use as the plate coin in my book.
