- Obv: One of Eastman Johnson's "holey" patterns, the center is perforated with an eight-sided scalloped design, around which are 13 stars, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the border and the date 1884 at bottom. Rev: The denomination FIVE CENTS is split above and below the central perforation, with two shields also flanking the perforation, one left and one right. Handsome nickel-gray patina with the fields showing full reflectivity and free of all but a trace of carbon. Scarce with perhaps 25 to 30 examples known in this metallic composition, and always popular for its unusual design and central perforation.
