- Walter Breen called this particular variety an overdate in his 1988 Encyclopedia, where he credited its discovery to Don Taxay circa 1962. More recent research by Kevin Flynn, however, suggests that the final digit in the date is repunched, hence the 1869/'8' designation on the PCGS holder. Only 600 Proofs (and just 4,500 circulation strikes) were struck making this a very difficult date to source. Iridescent undertones of antique gold and lilac-blue come to life as otherwise steely-charcoal surfaces dip into a light. Fully struck, this example makes a strong impression on the viewer.
