1893 Liberty Head Half Eagle. JD-1, the only known dies. Rarity-5+. Proof-55 (NGC). This handsome specimen exhibits wisps of pale rose iridescence to otherwise honey-gold surfaces. Appreciable reflectivity remains in the fields to help confirm the Proof status, the major design elements overall sharply defined. As with all Proof Liberty Head half eagles, the 1893 is rare and elusive at all levels of preservation. Just 77 coins were originally produced, and survivors are thought to number between 35 to 45 specimens (per John W. Dannreuther, 2018). PCGS# 8488. NGC ID: 28CX.
