Lot Description
1802, 2 over 1. NGC graded Mint State 64. A handsome and decidedly rare choice Brilliant Uncirculated quarter eagle, frosty throughout the obverse and reverse. The alert grading service quickly saw this coin’s benefits and prime quality when it assigned a Mint State 64 grade. 1802 is rare in the extreme in Mint grade. First, there were only 3,035 minted, second, nearly all saw circulation or sped overseas in payment for imports; and finally, it can only have been through merest luck and chance that a few Uncirculated specimens survive (there being no collectors around in the early 19th century to save these). One of the finest graded 1802/1 quarter eagles. (#7650)
