- 158.8 grains. A handsome example from the typical clashed state of the dies. Smooth and glossy light to medium brown with a choice appearance on both sides. Struck notably off-center to 1 o'clock, not so far off to lose devices, but they cling to the rim on both sides. Some trivial verdigris is seen in a few spots, but no significant marks or issues. The heavy reverse clash joins a lighter but crisp clash on the obverse, the usual die state. This is a very nice example of the variety.<p>Retz's census includes an EF described as "slightly off center" from Mary Sauvain's November 1991 fixed price list, lot 50; we wonder if this is that coin. Its quality surpasses all but a few we've offered in our history, and most advanced collections get by with a VF coin or one that's a bit sharper but has significant problems. It's notable that the Richard August Collection includes not only specimens from both the unclashed and clashed die states, but manages to represent both with coins of Condition Census quality!
