Superior quality and stunning eye appeal for the issue, it is no surprise that this is one of the very finest 1914-D Indian eagles seen by both PCGS and CAC. Both sides are dressed in a delightful blend of honey-rose color and billowy satin luster. A hint of pale silvery tinting is also noted, further evidence of this coin's awesome originality. Fully struck with smooth-looking surfaces that impress in all regards.<p>The 1914-D is one of the more available of the branch mint Indian eagles with a mintage of 343,500 pieces, which is surprising since the issue seems to have seen limited release both into domestic circulation and for use in the export trade. Dave Bowers (2017) reports:<p><em>The 1914-D $10 was one of 16 earlier-dated gold coins available in Uncirculated condition for face value (plus mailing charge) from the Treasury Department in the summer of 1932. This is significant as it indicates that these were being held in quantity in storage at this time.</em><p>Most of these coins remained undistributed and were melted in 1937 - representing the majority of the mintage. Several thousand circulated examples managed to avoid this fate, mostly in EF or AU grades, while repatriations from foreign bank hoards beginning primarily in the 1970s have yielded a similar number of Mint State coins. Today the typical Uncirculated survivor is heavily bagmarked and shows the telltale signs of storage and transportation in sacks; this was also the case during the era in which Mr. Stack collected. With premium Gem Mint State examples in short supply now, as they were in the mid-20th century, the opportunity to acquire this Condition Census PCGS/CAC MS-66 is a fleeting one that deserves the utmost in attention from advanced gold enthusiasts.
