Description du lot
When offered in our (Bowers and Ruddy's) October 1982 sale of the gold coins in the celebrated Eliasberg Collection, this majestic Sandblast Proof double eagle was described as:
1913 Gem Matte Proof-67. About 20 examples are known from a reported mintage of 58, and even this estimate may be on the high side. Very few have appeared at auction over the years. Like the other Matte Proof coins offered here, the present coin is virtual perfection. An item for the connoisseur.
As related elsewhere in this catalog, the most modern estimate for surviving Proof 1913 double eagles is that of 35 to 45 coins put forth by John W. Dannreuther in 2018. Particularly rare in Gem and finer grades, our offering of multiple high grade specimens in this sale represents a fleeting bidding opportunity for advanced collectors that is not likely to be repeated any time soon. Expect strong competition for this handsome and thoroughly PQ specimen with one of the most illustrious provenances in all of U.S. numismatics.
