Lot Description
Rare Hodder 1-A Elephant Token, Diagonals in Shield Undated (ca. 1694) London Elephant Token. Hodder 1-A, W-12000. Rarity-6+. GOD PRESERVE LONDON. Diagonals in Center of Shield. EF-40 (PCGS). 180.5 grains. An excellent representative of this rare Elephant token variety featuring the only reverse die with diagonal lines in the center of the shield connecting the four quadrants. Only ten examples have been graded at PCGS and there are no likely no more than two dozen extant in total. This pleasing Extremely Fine specimen has much to recommend it including choice light brown color, no roughness, and just a handful of small marks. Furthermore, this coin was very well struck and displays unusually bold diagonals -- the most important feature of the variety and often weak on mid-grade examples. Dies are rotated 90 degrees clockwise. A significant and desirable piece for an advanced colonial cabinet. Provenance: From our sale of the Ted L. Craige Collection, January 2013 Americana Sale, lot 11022. PCGS# 61. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
