- Tompkins Die Stage 2/3, Rea et al. Die State a. Richly toned surfaces are dressed in a blend of deep steely-charcoal and reddish-russet. Steel-blue and pinkish-rose undertones are also present, to be admired when the coin is observed with the aid of direct lighting. Nicely centered and well struck overall, most design elements are boldly to sharply defined in the absence of all but light wear. Minimally, and also gently circulated, there are no sizeable or otherwise significant marks to distract the eye.<p>After the limited delivery of 1804, quarter dollar coinage continued to increase in 1806, during which calendar year the Mint delivered 206,124 coins in fulfillment of four warrants. This sizeable (for the era) mintage required six obverse and eight reverse dies in 10 pairings. The Browning-1 is the only overdate variety of the issue, and it shares its reverse die with the 1805 B-4 and 1807 B-1 pairings. While not a rare attribution in an absolute sense, the 1806/5 B-1 is conditionally challenged with most survivors well worn. The present example in NGC AU-58 is tied for CC#5 based on the 2010 Rea et al. census, although it is not included therein.
