- A legendary condition rarity among Morgan silver dollars, Gem Mint State examples of the 1895-O are more rumored than real in today's market. Fortunately for advanced specialists in this popular and widely collected series, this is just such a coin. A richly original piece, both sides exhibit warm russet outlines to many of the design elements, especially those on the reverse. For that side we also note a blush of blue-gray patina along the upper left border, while the left obverse periphery is enhanced by a crescent of steel-olive, sea-green and reddish-rose colors. The in-hand appearance is exceptionally smooth for this conditionally challenged issue, and even with the aid of a loupe both sides still present as virtually pristine. Superior luster and striking qualities join exceptional surface preservation to establish this remarkable premium Gem as one of the finest 1895-O dollars available to today's discerning Morgan dollar enthusiasts. Phenomenal!<p>With a mere 450,000 coins struck the 1895-O boasts one of the lowest mintages among circulation strike Morgan dollars. Most examples were retained in federal vaults and melted later, although more than 100,000 pieces probably entered commercial channels and account for the typically encountered worn survivor in today's market. Mint State coins have always been elusive in numismatic circles and, in fact, this is the rarest New Orleans Mint Morgan dollar in Mint State, and the third rarest in the series as a whole after the legendary 1892-S and 1893-S. When encountered at all Mint State examples of the 1895-O are apt to display poor striking quality and/or unattractive surfaces. The present example offers virtually unheard of quality for the issue and its inclusion in this sale represents a fleeting bidding opportunity not to be overlooked.
