Lot Description
1803 Capped Bust Right Eagle. Taraszka-30, BD-5. Rarity-4+. Large Reverse Stars, Extra Star or 14-Star Reverse. MS-60 (NGC). A lovely example of this popular die variety, the ""14-Star Reverse"" discovered by Harry W. Bass, Jr. on a piece he bought in 1966. The tiny extra star can be seen on the final (rightmost) cloud, and is easily detected on higher grade, nicely struck examples. The present coin offers excellent mint luster and warm honey gold toning on both sides. Very nice eye appeal overall. There are light adjustment marks seen on the obverse, but are essentially invisible without magnification. Nicely struck overall, with faint softness on the eagle's breast feathers, and a shallow area at the right (viewer's left) talon. Otherwise, nicely executed. Not counted among the rarer varieties for the year, but distinctive and certainly the most popular for the curious little extra star.
