- Tompkins Die Stage 1/5, Rea et al. Die State a. Rea et al. Plate Coin. Continuing with the Tompkins Reference Collection's remarkable series of die states for this scarce Browning number, this Die Stage 1/5 example exhibits a fourth crack from the border at the first letter A in AMERICA, which splits at the top of the eagle's left wing. Really a lovely near-Mint State Capped Bust quarter, both sides exhibit glints of sandy-gold and light russet to a base of warm pewter gray patina. Softly frosted in texture with an otherwise bold to sharp strike that comes up significantly short at only the eagle's right wing and leg, left of center on the reverse. A thoroughly PQ example of this challenging Browning number, this coin is ranked CC#4 in the 2008 Tompkins census and tied for CC#2 in the 2010 Rea et al. census. It is sure to see spirited bidding from advanced early quarter enthusiasts, which activity will certainly result in a strong price realized.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Another of Denis Loring's special coins that I was able to purchase as an improvement to my collection after being outbid by him at the Reiver sale. I had held the example in the following lot as my set piece for the variety for more than 20 years, never believing that I would be able to upgrade. Who could ask for more in a rare die marriage?
