Lot Description
This is a fascinating and visually stunning overstrike with both the New Jersey copper and Connecticut copper dates bold and plainly visible at 6 and 5 o'clock on the obverse, respectively. ET LIB from the undertype is also clear at 1 to 2 o'clock on that side, while CONNEC from the undertype frames the lower right portion of the shield on the reverse. A few other elements of the Connecticut copper design are discernible with patience, and the host is almost certainly a Draped Bust Left example. The New Jersey copper design is generally bold, although some of the peripheral letters are faint to illegible, especially those in CAESAREA. The planchet is a bit ragged at 12 o'clock relative to the obverse, to no great detriment. Microporosity to both sides and a couple of dull marks on the horizontal lines of the shield on the reverse are noted for accuracy, but are not inconsistent with the assigned grade. The color is pleasing in a blend of rose-brown and deeper olive-charcoal, the latter generally nestled around and within the design elements.
