- 1841-D Liberty Half Eagle. Winter 5-B. Tall D. AU-53 (NGC). According to Doug Winter in the 2003 book Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint: 1838-1861, "This is a rare and important variety which deserves to sell for a significant premium over Variety 5-D." A boldly struck AU with only light wear to report, a smattering of small and moderate-size abrasions also points to a short stint in active circulation. Even khaki-gold color, with faint traces of original luster coming into view at more direct angles. As an issue, the 1841-D is rarer than such other Dahlonega Mint Half Eagles as the 1842-D Small Date, 1844-D and 1847-D.
