Lot Description
1873 Two-Cent Piece. Close 3. Proof-64 BN (PCGS). Flickers of original rose-orange color accent this otherwise warmly toned, copper brown two-cent piece. The surfaces are smooth and attractive with a razor sharp strike throughout. This short-lived denomination from the 19th century U.S. Mint passed into history in 1873 with a Proof-only mintage that is usually estimated at 600 pieces. Close 3 examples, as here, are thought to be originals, while their Open 3 counterparts are considered restrikes. In the absence of an associated circulation strike issue this is the rarest date in the two-cent series, and survivors enjoy strong demand among advanced collectors. PCGS# 3651. NGC ID: 2753. PCGS Population: 46; 30 finer in this category (Proof-66 BN finest).
