1870-S Liberty Head Double Eagle. AU-58+ (PCGS). A prooflike beauty that reveals considerable reflectivity in the fields as the surfaces dip into a light. The strike is suitably bold for a Type II Liberty Head twenty, and both sides are bathed in vivid golden-orange patina that further enhances already strong eye appeal. The mintage for this issue is a generous 982,000 pieces with a face value of $19,640,000. Likely, many were sent overseas later in the decade, accounting for most of those surviving today.
