Lot Description
A visually intriguing piece, the viewer is immediately met by two planchet clips, one straight the other curved, at 11 and 1 o'clock, respectively. These have cropped the sun a bit tight, also the rings at lower reverse, but the strike is actually well executed with universally bold VF detail throughout the design. Dramatic late die state with heavy clashing on both sides, also "doubling or shift in clashing seen on eyes of sunface in lower ring," as described by Newman (2008). Minor planchet roughness and fissures are generally concentrated at central reverse, central and lower obverse, surfaces free of troublesome marks. The color is generally medium brown and pleasing in a moderately circulated Fugio. Newman 21-I is a very difficult variety to find nice; most advanced collections get by with a VF coin or one that's a bit sharper but has significant problems. This one is admirable, the aforementioned planchet clips and clashing providing much to engage the detail-oriented numismatist.
