Lot Description
1866 Pattern Five-Cent Piece. Judd-508, Pollock-592. Rarity-6+. Proof-65 RB (PCGS). 1869 Pattern Seated Liberty Dime. Judd-717, Pollock-797. Rarity-7-. Proof-64 RD (PCGS). Struck on a 100% copper planchet that weighs 4.99 grams per the PCGS insert. Plain Edge. A splendid strike, showing bold detail in all areas of the design. Remarkably well preserved are the mirror fields which offset the frosted devices. Toned from the original bright red to a blend of rose, crimson, blue with fiery red evident in the fields. Beautiful and desirable in every way. Free of carbon issues or handling marks of any consequence. This is a transitional pattern which is quite similar to the Shield nickel design adopted without rays in 1867. The reverse stars surrounding the large 5 also changed locations on the regular issue. One of the finest seen of perhaps 20 known in all. No full Red examples have been certified by PCGS at any grade level.
