Lot Description
The final quarter issue struck in this southern most branch mint until 1892 and the introduction to the Barber series, this MS64 ranks among the HIGHEST graded at PCGS. A major condition rarity, there are just three graded finer at PCGS. Original, mottled patina is brought out by a thick, underlying satiny sheen. Rich coppery gold clings to the rims, before blending to a pearly-blue-pewter-silver. Sharply struck, we note just a few microscopic ticks that are well hidden by the original toning. PCGS 11, NGC 8. The most recent example sold two years ago, realizing $2,640; this one last sold in December 2013 for $4,113. The market has unfairly put great coins like this on sale, as they were bringing $5,000-$6,000 in 2008-2009. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $4,000. A lovely pre-Civil War Seated quarter worthy of careful attention. Cert. Number 28165065 PCGS # 5452
