- Obv: A head of Liberty faces left with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above, the date 1877 below, and 13 stars arranged around the border, seven left, six right. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY in raised letters and decorated with wheat ears, cotton leaves and bolls. The digit 8 in the date is punched over an erroneous 1, the engraver initially starting the date too far to the right. Rev: A heraldic eagle with shield on its breast clutches an olive branch in its right talon and group of arrows in its left talon. The Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed directly into the field above the eagle. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the upper border, the denomination HALF DOLLAR along the lower border.
This is one of several pattern half dollars of 1877 whose design is attributed to William Barber. The uspatterns.com website accounts for only three specimens: the Maris-Garrett specimen, which is the finest; the Bass-Simpson specimen currently certified Proof-62 by PCGS; and the Byron Reed specimen in the Durham Museum, which is a darkly toned ICG Proof-65. That offered here is the Maris-Garrett specimen, which is confirmed by the presence of a tiny planchet void in the reverse field below the letter N in UNUM, although the coin was dipped at some point between 2009 and 2017 and no longer displays the richly original toning seen in earlier offerings. As the finest known, and one of only two specimens in private hands, the significance of this Deep Cameo Proof can hardly be overstated. Sure to see spirited bidding.
