Lot Description
1829 Capped Bust Half Dime. LM-3. Rarity-2. MS-65 (NGC). Deep hues of russet, purple-rose, and electric-teal coloration adorn the beautifully preserved surfaces of this sharply struck Gem example. Well preserved and free of any distracting marks or blemishes. Although the Capped Bust design by John Reich was initiated in 1807 (such as on the half dollar), half dimes were not made until 1829. Striking began in the early morning hours of July 4th of that year, so as to have a supply of them on hand for a ceremony that day with the cornerstone of the Second Philadelphia Mint being laid. Half dimes of the designs of the date were then continued into the 1830s.
