- The obverse and reverse designs are the same that the Mint used for the regular issue 1865 quarter eagle. As noted at the oft-quoted uspatterns.com website: "Although these are described as regular die trial pieces in the standard references, it is more likely that the off-metal 'trials' of this year were deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete gold sets of this year containing the With Motto half eagle, J-445/446; eagle, J-449/450; and double eagle, J-452/453." The offered specimen is choice for the grade with soft pastel undertones to dominant toning in warm olive-gray. Laden with eye appeal, this rare quarter eagle will bring out the best in our bidders.
