Lot Description
Sharply struck with bountiful satin luster, this beautiful example is enhanced by brilliant, sparkling-white surfaces. Both sides are pleasingly smooth, certainly free of sizable marks, and have an appearance that is quite close to Select Uncirculated quality.<p>The rarity of the 1884-S Morgan dollar in Mint State is well known, and survivors are avidly sought for advanced collections of this ever-popular series. As with many issues of this type, the 1884-S has a respectable mintage, in this case 3,200,000 pieces. The vast majority of survivors are worn, however, suggestive of widespread circulation - an unusual situation for a silver dollar of this type. Indeed, the 1884-S is plentiful in circulated grades, and most collectors settle for an AU to represent the date in a Morgan dollar set. For the advanced numismatist the present lot offers the chance to acquire a solid Mint State example with superior eye appeal relative to the MS-62 designation from PCGS. A lovely piece, and sure to appeal to astute bidders.
