Lot Description
1896 Pattern Five-Cent Piece. Judd-1772, Pollock-1989. Rarity-6+. Proof-62 Cameo (PCGS). The central device on the obverse is a shield with 13 stripes, over which a scroll inscribed LIBERTY is draped. Behind the shield are two crossed poles bearing a liberty cap and a small eagle. The Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is above, the date 1896 is below and 13 stars are arranged at the border seven left, six right. On the reverse a curved olive sprig encircles the denomination 5 CENTS with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. Struck in one of four possible aluminum alloys with a plain edge.<br />     A bright, silver-white specimen with good contrast between the fields and devices. Probable Choice quality were it not for a shallow planchet flaw in the lower-left obverse field.
