- THE B.S.T. COLLECTION Ex D. Brent Pogue Collection, as noted on the insert. Among the FINEST 1795 silver dollars of any variety that survives. This example is the FINEST listed in the Bowers (2013) list of Notable Specimens. A truly AMAZING piece that was discovered in an old British collection and sold privately in the early 1970s, being repatriated to the United States nearly two centuries after striking. While the BB-27, B-5 is a Rarity-1 in a general sense, being the most common die marriage of the year, no Mint State early dollar can be considered "common" and any example that approaches the GEM grade is a true American numismatic treasure and a real prize for any collector. Both sides of this well struck example are awash in pastel iridescent toning. Shades of dusky blue, antique silver, with hints of orange-gold patina are gently distributed over the high quality surfaces. A bold and brilliant underlying luster, both satiny and a touch reflective depending on the angle at which the light hits the surfaces. Subtle shades of blue green, gold and deeper violet come out at certain angles at the obverse, the reverse shows hints of amber and some touches of peripheral blue. The strike is complete, the highest reliefs of the obverse center are crisply defined. The planchet was perfectly centered on the press and every detail from the dentils that flawlessly frame both sides is expertly rendered. The stars are razor sharp. The eagle's breast feathers are struck to the absolute fullest. Struck from the usually encountered die state with a thin crack that connect the reverse rim to the left stem. The surfaces are nearly perfect. A tiny faint line or two can be found with effort using a strong glass; the most serious issue is a small darker toning "dot" adjacent to star 13 about midway from the inner star point and Liberty's neck. These tiny "defects" can easily be overlooked in light of the overall presentation and preservation of this GORGEOUS early dollar. Ex. "British Collection"; private transaction in London, England in the early 1970s; Bowers and Ruddy Galleries; Dr. Neil Chamberlain Collection, via private sale; Montgomery Collection, Bowers & Ruddy, February 1976, lot 1998; Hank Rodgers Collection; Bret Simons, by private sale, May 1978; Foxfire Collection (Claude E. Davis, MD); acquired with the Foxfire Collection, en bloc, by sale, October 2004 (as NGC MS66); D. Brent Pogue Collection, Part II, September 2015, lot 2047; our consignor, via Legend Numismatics. PCGS 8, NGC 10, CAC 4. PCGS has graded just three in MS64+. Since this coin sold, the only comparable example to sell was the Moughey-Clapp-Eliasberg-Cardinal-Jack Lee B-77, BB-18 that sold for $264,000 in the 2021 FUN auction. The market for top quality rare coins has greatly expanded in the two years since that coin sold and the current PCGS Price Guide value is $375,000. Only a single MS66 is graded higher at PCGS, the Catherine Bullowa-Brent Pogue coin that brought $822,500 in the same sale as this magnificent coin. We would like to extend good luck wishes to all the bidders and a hearty congratulations to the eventual winning bidder, you will be placing a real prize of American numismatics to your collection when you get this GEM.
