Lot Description
At first glance, the NGC PF-61 grade may seem wholly inadequate for this highly popular Flying Eagle pattern, as it offers superb pecan-brown color and nearly complete striking definition. Delicate color shift on the highpoints presumably represents trivial "cabinet friction", and perhaps this, combined with the presence of a single contact point in the obverse right field, determines the grade. Although the 1856 small cent technically could not be called "rare", this opulent example will command strong offers from prospective bidders given the everlasting celebrity of the issue.
