Lot Description
Manley Die State 3.0. Moderately, yet evenly worn, both sides retain bold definition to all major design elements. The surfaces are microgranular, a feature that is just as easily overlooked as the few wispy pin scratches present on Liberty's portrait and at right central reverse. Pleasingly smooth in-hand, with deep, rich, olive-copper and chestnut-brown patina providing strong eye appeal for the grade.<p>Cohen-2 is the first of four die marriages produced for the 1803-dated half cent issue, Bill Eckberg (2019) assigning it to the Mint's delivery of December 31, 1803, which also included the first of the 1803 C-1 coins. Scarce in an absolute sense, only about 100 coins are extant from the 1803 C-2 dies. With Eckberg further noting that "very few are better than VG," this is a significant offering at the PCGS Fine-12 level.
