- Lot Description
- An Uncirculated example of the 1866, the coin is bright with only a handful of tiny grade-limiting ticks on each side. The lustrous surfaces are an attractive blend of yellow-gold. The striking is quite good on both sides, with some normal lightness at the highest waves of Miss Liberty's hair, and on the wreath bow, but sharp elsewhere. The luster is rich. Only 4,000 circulation strikes were made of the 1866 $3, of which relatively few remain today. As is the case with other gold coins of the era, numismatists who desired examples for their cabinets ordered Proofs and ignored circulation strikes.
