- The Wright Plate Coin
1822 Matron Head Cent. N-10. Rarity-2. MS-62 BN (NGC).
An important example of this variety, selected to illustrate the Newcomb-10 die pair in John D. Wright's 1992 middle-date reference The Cent Book. Warm shades of golden brown are marbled with darker swaths of steel blue across each side, and traces of pinkish mint luster remain on the reverse. A few shallow marks are noted at Liberty's eye and at star 5, though the surfaces are otherwise smooth. The luster is satiny throughout, framing uniformly bold devices rendered in Noyes Die State A/A (late).
Provenance: From the Paradise Collection. Earlier ex Heritage's sale of June 2017, lot 3368.
NGC Census (N-10 variety only): 1; 1 finer.
PCGS# 36739.
