- Obv: A bust of Liberty faces left, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the date 1871 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. This design is similar to that of the regular issue nickel three-cent piece of 1865 to 1889, but on a larger scale. Rev: A laurel wreath encloses the denomination V CENTS, the word CENTS curved and the Roman numeral V reversed with the thick stroke on the viewer's right. This bright and lustrous steel-gray Gem Cameo Proof exhibits lively frost on the motifs and deeply mirrored fields. A hint of pale champagne-gold endorses both sides, with direct lighting calling forth a lovely icy-blue appearance.
