Lot Description

Handsome BU preservation for this scarce and conditionally challenged three-dollar gold issue. Softly frosted in finish with hints of reflectivity in the fields, both sides also exhibit wisps of pinkish-rose iridescence to dominant golden-apricot color. Minimally marked for the assigned grade and visually appealing. The mintage for this issue of 4,850 circulation strikes is somewhat higher than in the previous few years and it is estimated that perhaps 300 to 400 examples can be accounted for today in all grades. A few dozen Mint State coins are known, but the supply is nowhere near large enough to meet demand from advanced collectors of classic U.S. Mint gold coinage. Here, then, is a fleeting bidding opportunity.
