Lot Description
The first Gobrecht dollar restrikes were produced in the late-1850s under Mint Director James Ross Snowden. Snowden was long a deal-maker and these pieces were produced in order to trade for Washingtonia that was missing from the Mint Cabinet Collection. His mission was successful and it led to more creations in later years by other mint directors. Gobrecht dollars have a long and storied background and have been popular with collectors for over 150 years. The present piece is a high-grade example with bluish-gray tints surrounded by a beautiful blue near the rim. The strike is full in all areas and there are no mentionable contact marks.
