- Apart from greater wear, this error presents in virtually the same manner as the 1812 brockage cent in NGC Fine-12 BN that realized $4,560 in our Spring 2022 Auction. That coin, however, was a Sheldon-289 Large Date example. Although the obverse shows only a full brockage of the reverse design, the position of the highest leaf in the wreath relative to the final letter S in STATES confirms that the offered coin is from the Sheldon-290 dies and, hence, corresponds to the Small Date Guide Book variety of the issue. Interestingly, we note medallic alignment between the brockage side and the properly struck reverse. The latter side is a tad rough with only faint detail to the wreath and denomination ONE CENT. The brockage side is better composed, smoother overall, and since the design elements are incuse, they retain clearer definition. Handsome medium tobacco brown patina, this is a pleasing piece for the grade and a significant rarity as a major Mint error from the brief and challenging Classic Head cent series of 1808 to 1814.
