- A glorious Gem Uncirculated example of this brief, conditionally challenged type in the early small cent series. Warmly colored in tan-orange with a tinge of pale olive, the surfaces are fully lustrous with a softly frosted finish. A universally sharp strike is a refreshing departure from the norm for the type, most examples of which are noticeably soft in one or more areas. Free of detracting blemishes, and thoroughly PQ. The second year 1858 Flying Eagle cent was produced in even greater numbers than the 1857, 24,600,000 vs. 17,450,000 circulation strikes. Both issues are of similar availability in numismatic circles, worn survivors plentiful and even Mint State coins readily obtainable in grades through MS-64. However, the type as a whole is scarce in MS-65 and rare any finer, making this lovely CAC-approved example in PCGS MS-65 an important offering for advanced specialists.
