- "1823" Matron Head Cent. N-3. Rarity-2. Die State A-B. Private Restrike. Copper. MS-64 RB (PCGS). This is a rare E-MDS with a single die crack (as made) that only partially bisects the obverse. Additionally, the cud break (also as struck) over star 7 is incomplete, as seen on uncracked examples in Die State A. Light sandy-brown patina to most areas, vivid rose-orange luster does shine forth powerfully from the peripheries. Tiny speckles of carbon to the obverse are all that preclude a full Gem rating. The earlier state of the dies suggests that this piece is probably one of the first Restrike 1823 Cents produced by Joseph Mickley circa 1863-1879.
