Lot Description

A hard and frosty example bathed in warm chestnut-brown patina. Centering on both sides is quite good, and while the border denticulation is not complete, most peripheral features are fully on the flan, and all are bold save for those affected by the prominent obverse die break at 6 o'clock. Strike detail is also sharp where allowed by die state, and while some original planchet texture remains in places, the in-hand appearance is uncommonly smooth and mark-free for the assigned numeric grade. Newman Obverse State E, usual Reverse State C. Retz describes this latest state, when the crack that extends through the sundial obscures IN of BUSINESS and Y of YOUR, as his state 4 and describes it as "extremely common."
