Lot Description: 1885 Gold Dollar. Proof-67 Cameo (NGC). CAC. 1848-C Liberty Quarter Eagle. AU-50 (NGC). Especially bright and flashy for this scarce date, with visually dramatic frost on the devices which stands tall against the mirror fields. In terms of presentation the surfaces are close to perfection, with a mere hint of a faint line or two in the left obverse field, a few others from gentle handling over the years. Classic orange-peel fields with the perfectly smooth surface that appears fragmented when studied like the surface of an orange or dried mud from an evaporated puddle. There is a fine die crack on the upper left wreath to the rim, seen on both 1885 Proof gold dollars in the current sale, a feature seldom seen on proof coinage of any era.
