Lot Description
1868 Pattern Shield Nickel. Judd-636, Pollock-708. Rarity-7-. Proof-63 (PCGS). OGH. Regular die trials striking of the 1868 Shield Nickel, struck in aluminum with a plain edge.<br />     A fully impressed specimen with bright, silver-white surfaces to both sides. Wispy hairlines are commensurate with the grade, and the only pedigree marker of note is a shallow scuff in the reverse field to the left of the digit 5. A rare type, Judd-636 has an extant population of only five or six pieces. These coins were struck to illustrate the feasibility of producing coins in aluminum, and they were distributed to contemporary collectors as part of special pattern proof sets.
