Lot Description
1870 Pattern Quarter. Judd-893, Pollock-993. Rarity-7+. Aluminum. Plain Edge. Proof-62 (PCGS). OGH. Obv: flowing hair bust of Liberty right in Phrygian cap, stars at headband, LIBERTY on ribbon entwined in her tresses, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, ribbon below with IN GOD WE TRUST. Rev: cereal wreath of corn, cotton, wheat, and rice, STANDARD in small letters above, 25 /CENTS / 1870 within on three lines. This satiny pale silver-gray specimen exhibits a whisper of frost on the devices and a hint of pale champagne-gold iridescence here and there. Scattered hairlines from a long-ago brushing account for the grade. The uspatterns.com website suggests a current total of known examples of Judd-893 at fewer than a half dozen pieces, which certainly upholds the High Rarity-7 designation. Rare enough that a few stray hairlines should not make much difference in your bidding strategy.
