1862 Liberty Half Eagle. AU-53 (NGC). Produced to the extent of just 4,430 pieces and subject to exportation and melting during the chaotic years of the Civil War, the 1862 Half Eagle is an understandably elusive coin in all grades. A sharply struck and minimally worn survivor, the present example has enough detail to suggest a Choice AU grade. There are no individually distracting abrasions, but honey-rose surfaces do reveal evidence of an old, light cleaning. A rare find for the collector specializing in the challenging Liberty Half Eagle series.
